There are countless products on the market now that encompass the Internet of Things, from smart home thermostats and surround sound systems to refrigerators and light bulbs.
One problem, however, is that many of these products don’t easily work together.
Certain products from the same manufacturer communicate well with one another; however, there’s not a universal language across the Internet of Things. As manufacturers continue to invent web-connective products, they’re forced to choose from these existing frameworks:
- Apple’s HomeKit
- Android’s Things
- Amazon’s Alexa
- Samsung’s SmartThings
- The Nest framework
The consumer must then decide whether the products they buy will work with the system they already have in place, knowing that not everything can be compatible.
Luckily, all sources point toward standardization, which will likely bring with it one common language in the near future.
