One of the most popular audiovisual (AV) innovations of the past several years is certainly surround sound. It can be modified for either commercial or residential spaces, and it truly gives AV presentations a boost.
The technology works by sending sound information through multiple audio channels. These audio channels lead the sound to various speakers around a room, which provides surround sound. Four-channel technology separated the sound that usually came from two speakers (stereophonic sound) into four (quadraphonic sound).
Most systems use a 5.1 surround sound setup. This means that a receiver is flanked by two front speakers with two more surrounding speakers to create the surround sound effect. Other configurations include 6.1 and 7.1.
