Not only have cloud computing solutions allowed us (normal, semi-literate computer users) to be able to take control of our own technology by making it easier to install and update software by ourselves, but the cloud has also made technology much more eco-friendly.
By downloading software from the cloud (through your operating system’s app store), the by-products of purchasing hardware and software (i.e. cardboard boxes, discs, etc.) is eliminated.
Prior to a cloud society—particularly during the era where systems were becoming large and involved large quantities of floppy disks (remember those?) or CDs—there was a lot of waste associated with installing a piece of computer software. Along with the multitude of disks, software also came in a cardboard box, which was either set on a shelf (to collect dust and take up space) or thrown out (hopefully recycled!).
Now, thanks to the cloud and app stores, you make a few simple clicks and your software downloads to your computer. Compared to previous decades, this makes computer technology much lighter and greener.
Cloud computing also reduce carbon emissions through minimized energy requirements. In fact, according to a report by the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), “offsite servers have the potential to prevent 85.7 million metric tons of annual carbon emissions by 2020.”
In general, cloud computing offers a more environmentally sustainable approach to the modern business’s needs than traditional software.
