Business leaders are using the cloud to give them the ability to change the resources they need on demand. This enables them to increase their resources to experiment with data sets and then dial back the resources once the experiment is done without any complications.
Furthermore, organizations who are on the leading edge are going even further—they’re using big data for even more focused analytics.
Many CIOs are making use of open source tools (including Spark and Apache Hadoop) and turning it “into actionable insight in real time” with what some are saying are remarkable results.
Take the city of Barcelona for example.
The city as a whole has made it possible to store and analyze data (including population flow and bike usage) in a hybrid cloud. The data is then displayed in a dashboard, which translates the information to citizens and city staff.
Another example is the UK’s Leeds Teaching Hospital. They’re using Hadoop for data analysis of hospital visits, drug sales and text files. This data, they hope, will help to track errors that would not be recorded otherwise.
These examples, and many others, show just how useful big data can be in a business setting.
